NMS: Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles Performance

May 12 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Saturday, May 12th | 2pm & 4pm | Battell Chapel (400 College Street, New Haven)

Join Neighborhood Music School (NMS) as they offer an afternoon of lively music with two highly anticipated concerts by the acclaimed Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles.

2PM | The afternoon will kick off with a performance by the All-City Honors Symphonic Band, a group comprised of students from Yale’s Music in Schools Initiative and New Haven Public Schools (NHPS). Among the pieces they will perform are finale excerpts from Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, conducted by Rubén Rodríguez, Director of Yale’s Music in Schools Initiative, along with conductors Matthew Fried and Marissa Iezzi.
Next is NMS’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by Mark Gahm. This advanced ensemble will perform several pieces that evoke very different character sketches, ranging from Charles Ives’ upbeat “Variations on America” to the dark and conflicted inner world of struggle reflected in Dmitri Shostakovich’sPrelude in E-flat minor.”

4PM | The second concert will begin at 4 p.m. with The Greater New Haven Concert Orchestra, conducted by Marvin Warshaw with Wind Coach Sue Zoellner-Cross and Assistant Conductor Chris Jones. This group’s performance will include “Pirates of Penzance for Woodwind Quartet,” Gabriel Fauré’s “Sicilienne” and two movements from Haydn’s Symphony No. 101, also known as “The Clock.”
The Greater New Haven Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Music Director Thomas C. Duffy, will perform Sibelius’ stirring “Finlandia,” followed by Rodrigo’sConcierto de Aranjuez,” which was inspired by the fragrant gardens of the Palacio Real de Aranjuez in 16th century Spain. The first movement will be performed by NMS guitarist Dani Zanuttini-Frank of Hamden. The afternoon concludes with nine Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein’s most famous musical theatre piece, “West Side Story.”

Tickets will be available at the door. Adults: $10, Children (under 12): $5, Seniors: $5.
